Cloth Diaper Considerations

Spoiler Alert: We already decided to buy cloth diapers for baby V. Aaand we already bought some :)

But I still wanted to share some of my thoughts and questions as we went through the process of deciding if cloth diapering was something we wanted to try or not.

Cloth diapering is the new thing (again). It seems like society has come full circle. I hear mamas talking about using cloth diapers with their kids all the time these days. And then I stayed at the home of one of those mamas. I watched her change her little girl in and out of cloth diapers all week. My initial "Eww, cleaning dirty cloth diapers would be disgusting" train of thought, quickly turned into a "Wow, it's really not that dirty or difficult" train of thought. By the end of the week I was practically sold on the idea.

So I went searching for information to convince my husband that keeping poopy diapers in the house and washing them over and over again was a good idea. I quickly found out that cloth diapering is:
  1. Economical - They say the average cost of diapers from birth to potty training is between $2500 and $3500. Although we did have to pay a big lump sum in advance to buy all the diapers (We spent approx. $500), once you factor in all the costs (diapers, water costs for washing, etc.) you still end up with HUGE savings. Plus, if you have more than one kid, you can use them again, or you can resell them when you're done - they maintain great resale value!

  2. Environmentally friendly - Disposable diapers take hundreds of years to decompose. Hundreds. Plus many cloth diapers are made with easily renewable resources: hemp, bamboo, and cotton.

  3. Easy to use - Waterproof linings with easy snaps or velcro are simple to use (or so I've heard). And as long as you have a washing machine, the washing doesn't have to be all that combersome either! Easier than driving to the stores for more diapers....

  4. Healthy  - Lastly, friends and strangers report that the natural fibres make these diapers more breathable. Sign me up for less rashes and health problems! I want to know what I'm putting on my baby's bum.
So based on these ideas and more, we've decided to take the plunge into cloth diapering.
Now to decide what type to buy!

  1. My 2cents:
Don't buy a lot of anything until you meet your baby (a few aio, a few pockets, a few shell and liner etc)
Aio (all in ones) are obviously the easiest. Remove put new one on.
Pockets (my personal fave) shell stuffed with inserts. Different configurations based on type of wetter you have and time of day. I would of chosen mostly pockets if water wasn't an issue for us. We have to watch our water.
Shells and liners (which I use) just replace the liner each change. Can get away with 1 shell a day if there is no messes on the shell! Savings all around.
Then there's prefolds and covers which I never considered so no advice on them.
I love grovia aio, best diaper, on the expensive side. Bum genius aio and pockets. Love sweet pea and flip covers. Had a few gdiapers which had a nice trim fit but never fit Case quite right. Gdiaps are cool tho, I'll try them again with baby 2 as they are the only diaper I found that allows for his size clothing. Often fluffy butts have to go up a size in pants!
I also love disposable diapers tho and use them when we're out. So easy. Ill never be a "hard core" cd mama. But I do love them.

As a newb I found it hard to find a good fit until his legs bulked up a bit. The gs fit best until 10 weeks. Then it was mostly flip covers with my home made inserts.
Snaps all the way for longevity especially if you will have more kids. I do have a few velcro in my stash for middle of the night changes, easier then wrestling with the correct snap placement when in mombie mode.
Good luck finding your perfect diap.
Also, we can't wait to meet him/her. Planning a trip there around April :)
